Labor-Climate Solidarity

FFCA mobilizes support for campaigns at the intersection of climate and public employment.

We organize our allies in the environmental movement to get out on the picket lines and support our teachers and public workers. We help workers create innovative policies and resolutions that are good for labor and good for the climate–and build support for their ideas within their unions. And we activate the public to support contract demands that benefit the environment and the broader community.

Return to Office

In the wake of Trump’s federal return to office mandate, Governor Newsom issued an Executive Order in March 2025 that would mandate state workers go from two to four days in the office. This Return to Office (RTO) mandate was delayed by a year, but is scheduled to go into effect in summer 2026. The RTO mandate would make life harder for our state workers–the people working hard to care for Californians’ health, address climate change, protect nature, and deal with the aftermath of climate catastrophes. The mandate would also put more cars on the road, aggravating traffic problems and increasing carbon emissions. In 2026, FFCA is supporting our public worker activists as they fight the RTO mandate–and organizing the public to stand in solidarity with them.

In February 2026, Assemblymember Alex Lee introduced AB 1729, legislation to support state workers, recognize the benefits of telework, and require transparent telework policies across state agencies.

We Can’t Wait

For years, California’s public school teachers have led the fight to divest their pension fund from fossil fuels. Now they’re fighting across the state for the schools our kids deserve–and we’re standing with them.
